अस्त्युत्तरस्यां दिशि देवतात्मा
हिमालयो नाम नगाधिराजः ।
पूर्वापरौ तोयनिधी वगाह्य
स्थितः पृथिव्या इव मानदण्डः ॥१.१॥
अन्वयः ॥ उत्तरस्यां दिशि हिमालयः नाम नगाधिराजः पूर्वापरौ तोयनिधी वगाह्य पृथिव्याः मानदण्डः इव स्थितः अस्ति।
पुंसवनी ॥ उत्तरककुभिः देवतास्वरूपो हिमालयनामकः पर्वतश्रेष्ठः पूर्वसमुद्रादारभ्य पश्चिमसमुद्रपर्यन्तं विस्तीर्णः, भूमेः परिच्छेदको दण्डः इव वर्तत इत्यर्थः। मानदण्डः हि मेयेन तुल्यपरिमाणो भवतीति यावत्।
उत्तरस्याम्=उदीच्याम्; दिशि=आशायाम्; देवतात्मा=देवतास्वरूपः; हिमालयो नाम=हिमालय इति प्रसिद्धः; नगाधिराजः=पर्वतराजः; पूर्वापरौ=पूर्वपश्चिमौ; तोयनिधी=समुद्रौ; वगाह्य=प्रविश्य; पृथिव्याः=भूमेः; मानदण्ड इव=परिच्छेदकदण्डः इव; स्थितः=अवस्थितः; अस्ति=वर्तते।
देवा आत्मा यस्य सः देवतात्मा। हिमानाम् आलयः हिमालयः। न गच्छन्तीति नगाः, अधिको राजा अधिराजः; नगानाम् अधिराजः नगाधिराजः। पूर्वश्च अपरश्च पूर्वापरौ। तोयानां निधिः तोयनिधिः। मानस्य दण्डः मानदण्डः, अथवा मानश्च असौ दण्डः मानदण्डः॥

In the third line of the sloka there is another form of text (paathaantharam).
पूर्वापरौ तोयनिधी वगाह्य ... here in the second word 'vaarinidhii' instead of तोयनिधी.
